This dish combines two amazing comfort foods—stir-fried yakisoba noodles and a fluffy hot dog bun—to create a portable, satisfying snack. Found in convenience stores, bakeries, and food stalls across Japan, yakisoba-pan is loved for its savory-sweet flavors, chewy noodles, and soft bread combination. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch or a unique addition to your homemade Japanese menu, this recipe is a must-try!
Ingredients (Serves 4)
- For the Yakisoba:
- 200g yakisoba noodles (or fresh ramen noodles)
- 100g thinly sliced pork belly (or chicken, tofu as a substitute)
- ½ cup cabbage, shredded
- ¼ cup carrot, julienned
- ¼ cup onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp yakisoba sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- For the Bun & Garnish:
- 4 hot dog buns (soft and slightly sweet)
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting the buns)
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional, for drizzling)
- 1 tbsp aonori (seaweed flakes)
- 2 tbsp pickled red ginger (beni shoga)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
Prepare the Yakisoba Noodles
If using fresh noodles, loosen them by placing them in a bowl of warm water for a minute, then drain well. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.
Stir-Fry the Ingredients
Add the sliced pork belly (or chosen protein) to the pan and cook until it turns slightly crispy and browned. Add the onions, cabbage, and carrots, stirring frequently. Cook until the vegetables become tender but still slightly crunchy.
Add the Noodles & Sauce
Add the loosened yakisoba noodles to the pan and mix well with the meat and vegetables. Pour in the yakisoba sauce, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to evenly coat the noodles. Continue cooking for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to absorb. Remove from heat.
Prepare the Buns
Slice each hot dog bun open, but don’t cut all the way through—leave a hinge to hold the noodles. Spread a thin layer of butter inside the buns and lightly toast them in a pan or oven until golden brown.
Assemble the Yakisoba-Pan
Generously fill each bun with a portion of yakisoba noodles. Garnish with aonori, pickled red ginger, sesame seeds, and green onions. Optionally, drizzle a bit of mayonnaise on top for extra creaminess.
Serve & Enjoy
Serve warm with a side of miso soup or a cold Japanese drink like ramune for an authentic experience!
Tips:
Use Japanese-style hot dog buns
🟢These are softer and slightly sweeter than regular buns, making them a perfect match for the savory noodles.
Don’t overcook the noodles
🟢Keep them slightly chewy to maintain texture and avoid mushiness.
Customize your fillings
🟢Add cheese, a fried egg, or even spicy mayo for a fun twist on the classic recipe.
