Ingredients (Serves 6)
- 1 lb (450g) ground pork
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 2 ½ cups steel-cut oats
- 6 cups water
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground sage
- 1 teaspoon marjoram
- ½ teaspoon thyme
- ½ teaspoon allspice
Step 1: Cook the Oats
In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Stir in the steel-cut oats and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats become thick and creamy.
Prepare the Meat Mixture
While the oats cook, heat a skillet over medium heat and sauté the chopped onions until soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. In a large bowl, combine the ground pork and ground beef. Mix in the sautéed onions and garlic. Season the meat mixture with salt, black pepper, sage, marjoram, thyme, and allspice.
Combine and Cook the Goetta Mixture
Once the oats have thickened, stir in the seasoned meat mixture. Cook on low heat for another 30 minutes, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking. The mixture should become thick and slightly sticky.
Shape and Chill the Goetta
Grease two loaf pans and pour the Goetta mixture into them, pressing down to smooth the surface. Allow the loaves to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight) to firm up.
Slice and Fry
Once chilled, remove the Goetta from the loaf pans and slice into ½-inch thick pieces. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil or butter Fry the slices for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
Serve and Enjoy
Serve the crispy Goetta slices with eggs, toast, or hash browns for a hearty breakfast.
Tips:
Use Steel-Cut Oats Only
🟢Quick oats or rolled oats will not give the same texture and may fall apart during frying.
Chill for Best Results
🟢The longer the Goetta chills, the firmer it will be, making it easier to slice and fry without breaking.
Don’t Overcrowd the Pan
🟢Fry the slices in batches to ensure they get evenly crispy on the outside.
