Chickpea Meatballs Recipe
Step 1
Wash and soak the split peas in cold water for 6 hours to make them more digestible.
Step 2
To prepare the sauce, finely chop one of the onions and sauté them in a pot coated with oil until they get caramelized gently. Then add a pinch of turmeric and black pepper to the pan and mix them until they release their aroma and color.
Step 3
Next, rinse and drain the soaked split peas and add them to the pot containing the onion and sauté for a minute.
Step 4
Now add the tomato paste to the pot and sauté it until it gets darker and the rawness of the paste is taken. Then pour one and a half liter of water into the pot and let the peas simmer for 30 minutes.
Step 5
Meanwhile, poke dried limes with a fork or a knife and soak them in a cup of water to remove their bitterness. After half an hour, when the sauce is cooked, add the limes and salt to it.
Step 6
To prepare the meatballs, grate the remaining onion with a fine grater. Add the minced meat, grated onion, chickpea flour, salt, black pepper, and turmeric into a large mixing bowl and mix them with your hands to form a dough.
Step 7
Scoop about the size of a small tangerine of the meat mixture, roll them into balls, and place them in the pot. It takes about an hour to cook the meatballs.
Step 8
After about 30 minutes, chop the potato coarsely and add it to the pot to cook. The consistency of this dish is up to you; you can serve it thick or juicy. Make some chickpea meatballs like this and enjoy.
Notes
vegan Chickpea Meatballs
If you want to make these meatballs vegan and use chickpeas instead of meat, firstly, you should soak the chickpeas with split peas. You can also use canned chickpeas. Then drain the chickpeas and add them to a food processor, process until smooth, and mix it with other ingredients. Finally, you have to bake them in the 180 Celsius (or 350 Fahrenheit) oven for about 10 minutes or sauté them on a hot skillet for 6 to 8 minutes per side until golden brown.
